Silverfield Announces Jeff Myers as Offensive Line Coach

Jan 08, 2023 | Football

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis head football coach Ryan Silverfield announced the hiring of Jeff Myers as offensive line coach on Sunday. Myers comes to the Tigers after spending the last seven seasons at Iowa State, five as offensive line coach. In 2019, Myers was listed in 247Sports' "30Under30" as one of the top rising stars in the profession.

"We are very excited to hire Jeff Myers as our offensive line coach," Silverfield said. "He will do a wonderful job relating to our players and maximizing their potential. Coach Myers' passion and knowledge will be displayed for our OL and entire program."

Myers coached seven players who earned All-Big 12 recognition in his Cyclone tenure, including All-Big 12 First Team selections in Julian Good-Jones (2019), Colin Newell (2020) and Trevor Downing (2021). Two of his pupils were Freshman All-Americans by The Athletic in Downing (2019) and Darrell Simmons (2020).

Myers helped the Cyclone offense thrive. From 2019-21, ISU produced three of the most prolific offenses in the history of Cyclone football. Iowa State broke the school record for total offense (444.3) and had the third-best scoring offense (32.2) in school history in 2019 and followed it up with the second-best scoring offense (32.9) and third-best total offense (436.3) totals in Cyclone history in 2020.

The 2020 season was historic in many ways. Iowa State finished the regular season in first place in the Big 12 standings, made the Big 12 Championship game and qualified for a New Year's Six bowl for the first time in school history.

The Cyclones capped off the season with a 34-17 win over Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
ISU's eight conferences wins and nine overall wins eclipsed or tied school records and the Cyclones earned their highest ranking in school history during the season (No. 6) and postseason (No. 9).

In 2022, Myers guided an Iowa State offensive line that helped the Cyclones out-gain nine of their 12 opponents on the season and end the season with the fourth-best passing offense (261.8) in the Big 12, ranking 39th nationally. Offensive lineman Trevor Downing was again named All-Big 12 following the season, earning second-team honors.

In 2021, the Cyclones recorded the fourth-best scoring average (31.3) and the fifth-best total offense (424.5), respectively, in the history of the program. ISU also ranked second nationally in red zone offense, converting on 47-of-49 trips for a 95.9 pct. clip to help the Cyclones earn their school-record fifth-straight bowl appearance.

Myers inherited an extremely young unit in 2020 but molded the group into one of 11 semifinalists for the Joe Moore Award, given annually to the nation's best offensive line.

Myers' group allowed the fewest sacks in the Big 12 (14) and aided the team in breaking the school record for rushing touchdowns in a season with 31, as the Cyclones rushed for two or more touchdowns in 11 of 12 games.

Myers' offensive line paved the way for a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in All-Americans David Montgomery and Breece Hall. Montgomery is currently with the Chicago Bears and Hall, one of only two consensus All-Americans in school history, was the nation's leading rusher in 2020 (1,572) who broke the all-time NCAA FBS record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (24), is currently on the New York Jets.

Myers worked directly with the Cyclone offensive line from 2016-17 as a graduate assistant, mentoring a pair of linemen who earned Second-Team All-Big 12 accolades in Nick Fett (2016) and Jake Campos (2017).

Myers was briefly a quality control assistant on offense for the Cyclones before being elevated to offensive line coach.

A native of Massillon, Ohio, Myers was a graduate assistant on offense at Toledo in 2015, helping the Rockets go 9-2 and win the Boca Raton Bowl. UT allowed just four sacks all season, ranking second nationally.

Myers was a three-year starter (2012-14) on the offensive line at Toledo, starting in 38-straight games. He was a two-time All-MAC selection and was named team captain in 2014, helping UT to a pair of nine-win seasons and two bowl appearances.

The Rockets ranked second in the MAC in rushing (240.6) and fourth in the league in total offense (445.2) in 2013 with Myers anchoring the line.

Myers signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns and participated in their minicamp in 2015.

Myers, who earned his bachelor's degree from Toledo in 2014, and his wife, Lauren, were married in 2018. They have a daughter, Kalani.
